We need to talk about the region\u2019s Souq-Amazon<\/a> induced euphoria\u2014bordering on hysteria. Calm down people, it\u2019s not the only big exit that MENA has seen.<\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s rather glamorous that one of the world\u2019s largest companies came knocking at our door in search of Souq\u2019s hand in marriage, but let\u2019s not forget the other homegrown stars making waves.<\/p>\n

The myth that the Middle East is void of any notable exits is often uttered in conversations between entrepreneurs, but it\u2019s just that; a myth.\u00a0One of the biggest culprits in\u00a0perpetuating this idea is a population of conservative-minded businesspeople too proud to disclose the details of their deals, as well as\u00a0a lack of media accurately reporting on them.<\/p>\n

In fact, according to the latest report released by\u00a0Magnitt<\/a>, a regional startup ecosystem tracker championing this kind of documentation, only a measly 38% of deals have been disclosed.<\/p>\n

The truth is that over the past five years, we\u2019ve had 60 startup exits across the MENA region aggregating to over $3 billion in exit valuations. The three largest exits were Media.net<\/a> ($900 million) in 2016, Yemeksepeti<\/a> ($589 million) in 2015, and Souq.com<\/a> ($580 million) 2017.<\/p>\n

Hot on the heels of Souq\u2019s big win,\u00a0the UAE\u2019s billionaire, Mohammed Alabbar, who seems to be buying up everything in sight in anticipation of Noon.com\u2019s big launch, went ahead and purchased\u00a0JadoPado<\/a> and Namshi<\/a>. And most recently,\u00a0Delivery Hero acquired Carriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s in the last few months alone. Magnitt\u2019s report also shows us how long it took these startups to go from inception to exit. \u201cThe 60 startups took on average seven years to exit from founding their companies,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n
