Can chromium picolinate supplements lower my blood sugar?

Chromium picolinate is a mineral found naturally in food such as meat, wholemeal bread, lentils, broccoli and potatoes, and is thought to improve the way the body metabolises sugar by working with the hormone insulin, says Anshu Bhimbat of LloydsPharmacy in Buckinghamshire.

Research shows it is safe to use with no reported side-effects when taken at the recommended dose — 200 microgram taken once a day

A number of studies have suggested that the supplement can lower blood sugar levels to the normal range (4 to 6 mmol/ litre) and that it can be helpful in treating type 2 diabetes, although the evidence is inconsistent.

But research shows it is safe to use with no reported side-effects when taken at the recommended dose — 200 microgram taken once a day (chromium picolinate is also found in multivitamins) — so supplements may be worth considering if you have diabetes. 

Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any supplement or herbal remedy as they can interfere with prescription medication.
