Ulcerative colitis is categorized according to location:

  • Proctitis involves only the rectum
  • Proctosigmoiditis affects the rectum and sigmoid colon
  • Left-sided colitis encompasses the entire left side of the large intestine
  • Pancolitis inflames the entire colon
