Heather Graham Wants to Make a Movie About Women Loving Sex

In completely awesome news, Heather Graham is working on a screenplay that sounds like your new favorite movie. While Heather has played plenty of sexy characters over the years (like a charming secret agent in Austin Powers and a Las Vegas stripper in The Hangover), she’s not really content with the types of roles that are being made for women right now. And here’s the great part: She’s ready to do something about it.

“When you don’t see the kind of stories out there that represent you, you have to make them yourself,” Heather said in a recent interview with Esquire. “I actually just wrote a script that I want to direct.”

So what can we expect from this new movie? “Sex from a female point of view,” says Heather. “But specifically women who like having sex. I don’t see anything in film about women who want to have sex. I don’t see myself and my friends represented. When do you ever get to see a movie from the point of view of a woman who’s more interested in having really great orgasms than finding a husband? I would say almost never.”

Yeah, we would second that. In the last few years, the media has come close to giving a more varied look at how women approach sex, dating, and love. We have the mostly-relatable plotlines on Girls, the awkward hookup scene in Bridesmaids, Aubrey Plaza as a virgin determined to enjoy her first time in The To Do List, and countless Amy Schumer sketches. But Heather is right—there is a serious lack of material when it comes to sex-positive female characters in film.

We also love the fact that Heather is ready to shake up the stereotypical gender roles in media. As we know from the experts, female desire is much more complicated than we previously thought and male sexuality isn’t as simple as all the stereotypes suggest. It’s just not the case that men are inherently more sexual than women—so let’s see that on the big screen.

In the meantime, let’s hope that Heather’s screenplay gets picked up, stat!
