HMN 2025: How After Dobbs choice, 42% of surveyed abortion suppliers in abortion-ban states relocated

Following the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) choice, 42% of surveyed clinicians who supplied abortions in states banning abortion relocated to a different state, nearly all to states not banning abortion, based on a analysis letter published on-line June 11 in JAMA Network Open.

Dana Howard, Ph.D., from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, and colleagues recruited clinicians who supplied abortion the 12 months earlier than Dobbs and/or on the time of the survey to look at the proportion of abortion-providing clinicians who modified their main state of practice.

The analytic pattern included 305 respondents. The researchers discovered that 91% of respondents reported offering some non-abortion well being care. Overall, 74% and 26% of individuals practiced in no-ban states and ban states earlier than Dobbs, respectively. Forty-seven respondents (16%) relocated their main practice state; clinicians working towards in states that might ban abortion had been more likely to relocate than these in no-ban states (27 versus 20 respondents [42% versus 9%]).

“Given that the majority study respondents supplied each abortion and nonabortion well being care, these accelerated relocations have implications for abortion entry and for the broader maternal well being workforce, exacerbating well being care deserts and consequence disparities,” the authors write.
