10 healthiest places to live in America (hint: no capital cities made the cut)

We all want to be in better health – whether its losing a few pounds, dodging common infections, or getting some more rest.

But it seems none of us have hit on the right formula.

However, a new study by TIME Money has identified 10 cities in America that come closest to perfection according to CDC data.

On top: Highlands Ranch, Colorado, a quiet community 15 miles from Denver which has the lowest obesity rate in the country.

It also boasts low disease rates, high rates of physically active residents, and generally good diets.

Koolaupoko, Hawaii, took second place thanks to its record of the fewest cancer deaths in the United States.

Third place was handed to Greenwich, Connecticut, thanks to its burgeoning concentration of hospitals.

Rounding off the top five was Woodbury, Minnesota, near St Paul (which has the lowest heart disease rate in the country) and Quincy, Massachusetts, near Boston (which boasts the lowest rate of diabetes deaths).

To compile the list, TIME analyzed healthcare, health statistics, and anecdotal evidence on how healthy residents feel.

For healthcare they looked at how many hospitals, doctors, and clinics were within a 30-mile radius of the city.

They contrasted that figure with how many residents had health care.

Physical activity levels, obesity rates and disease rates were also taken into account.

As were personal testimonies about the general consensus on the city’s health status.

The city with the most healthy-feeling residents was Nashua, New Hampshire, which came in sixth place.

No other city surveyed by the CDC had such a high concentration of people who felt ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.

Following in seventh place was High Plains, Wyoming, thanks to the city’s low rate of diabetes.

And Provo, Utah, with the nation’s lowest rate of childhood obesity, snapped up eighth place.

Los Angeles, known as a melting pot of health fanatics, did not make the cut.

In fact, if angelenos are looking for a healthier hot spot, they’ll need to drive five hours north to San Rafael, California, which is the ninth-healthiest cities, according to TIME.

Finally, coming in 10th, was St Augustine, Florida, with its staggeringly low rates of deaths related to heart disease.
