Alberta Health to investigate cancer screening centre

Alberta Health Services has announced it will review the operations of the Forzani and MacPhail Colon Cancer Screening Centre in Calgary.

The centre was the focus of extensive testimony at the provincial inquiry into queue-jumping in the Alberta health-care system.

In a written statement, AHS says the review of the centre will start May 1 and will be finalized after the release of Justice John Vertes’s report from the provincial inquiry.

“It’s important that we ensure that all AHS guidelines and procedures are being followed at the centre, and that patient care is at the forefront of all booking decisions and treatment,” said executive vice-president Chris Mazurkewich.

Earlier this year, doctors and employees of the centre alleged in their testimony at the provincial inquiry that clients of the centre were moved up on the wait list for colonoscopies.

AHS says the review will consider that public testimony and several other factors including the centre’s own wait list procedures and its overall function.

The review will be conducted by two health-care leaders from outside of AHS and a physician from the Edmonton area.
