Andy Puddicombe: ‘We Are Not What We Do’


As mostly as we competence get sucked into meditative otherwise, it’s good value remembering that we are not what we do, what we say, what we think, or even what we feel. To declare this for ourselves is to find assent of mind.

Now reading that, we competence have gifted one of many opposite reactions. The initial is one of relief, one of: “Thank integrity for that, we knew there contingency be some-more to life than this.” The second is one of fear, one of: “Well, if I’m not any of those things, afterwards what, or who, a heck am I?” The third is one of wonder, one of: “Wow, could that unequivocally be true?” And a fourth is one of skepticism, one of: “This man hasn’t got a idea what he’s articulate about.” Needless to say, given that we are not what we think, it unequivocally doesn’t matter that it was!

At this theatre it would be easy to get mislaid in all kinds of philosophical arguments about how we conclude who or what we are. But that isn’t what this is about. This is about anticipating some space in a mind, reduction judgement, a larger clarity of perspective, in that we see this elemental law for ourselves in a unequivocally approach and personal way.

It is about noticing that only since a suspicion appears in a mind, we are not that thought, and only since we competence feel a certain approach during a sold time, we are not that feeling. It is a disproportion between being in a charge and witnessing a storm. It is a disproportion between being outward in that storm, swept divided by a breeze and a rain, and sitting inside, friendly and comfortable by a fire, as we watch a charge pass by.

What does this demeanour like on a unsentimental level? Well, consider how many times you’ve gifted a suspicion though not taken it seriously. Maybe it was when we were out driving, wanting to get someone behind after they’ve only cut we up. But we see how crazy a suspicion is, how most we value your car, not to discuss your life, and confirm to let it go. Maybe it was as a parent, carrying not slept for days, wanting to put a baby inside a soundproof tent, tucked divided somewhere good and safe, preferably outside, in a garden. But we see how absurd a suspicion is and, once again, we let it go. Or maybe it was when your trainer had only flustered we in front of all of your colleagues and we illusory pulling him or her off a roof of a very, unequivocally high building. But we suspicion about it some some-more and eventually satisfied that a suspicion was not value holding seriously.

So we already have this filter. We already have a ability to commend that a suspicion is only a thought, that we do not have to take it seriously, to buy into it or indulge it. Just since something pops into a mind does not make it something real, something we need to act on or trust in. It is not who we are. Just since something pops into a mind does not meant that it is contemplative of a form of chairman we are either, that it creates us a good chairman or a bad person. Imagine a vigour of judging each suspicion that appears in a mind, of feeling some clarity of shortcoming or tenure over each singular suspicion and feeling that arises. Sure, we have shortcoming as to either we select to rivet a suspicion and take it to a turn of debate or action, though a suspicion is only a thought. It is like a rainbow in a sky… bright, colorful, amazing, inspiring, full of intensity and yet, ultimately, there is zero discernible there during all.

When we take a thoughts too seriously, life becomes heavy. When we brand with a emotions too strongly, we start to get mislaid in them. When we assume a difference conclude us, we start meditative too much. And when we are incompetent to find any clarity of redemption with a things we destroy to get right in life, afterwards we start to feel bitter.

The mind is bigger than this. Life is bigger than this. There is something over thought, over feeling, over debate and over action. It is a place of awareness. We can call it by any name we like. We competence insert it to a sold approach of thinking, a philosophy, a faith, or have no name for it whatsoever. It unequivocally doesn’t matter. Either way, it doesn’t change this peculiarity of awareness, this place of perspective, from that we can see a suspicion for what it is and let it go with ease.
