Benefit’s Jared Bailey shares his eyebrow tips

Speak to any beauty expert worth their salt and many will tell you it’s not the eyes that hold the key to your beauty, but what sits directly above them – your eyebrows.

Which is why we were all ears when Benefit Cosmetics’s Global Brow Expert, Jared Bailey, shared his eyebrow words of wisdom.

Speaking to Today Extra, the guru explained how to knock years off your face via your brows – whether they are uneven, patchy or untreated.

‘There are two ways to look younger in life,’ Jared explained. ‘Fill in your eyebrows… or make older friends.’

UNEVEN BROWS

The first type of eyebrow Jared took a look at was a woman’s who were uneven – or different on both sides.

To counteract this problem, the brow guru explained you need to do one important thing.

‘Every brow has three key portions – it has the start, the arch and the end,’ he outlined – your job to create symmetry is to find these three points.

To do this, Jared recommends ‘measuring from the dimple of the nose straight up to the beginning portion of the eyebrow with a pencil’ – this represents where your brows should start.

Then, he said you need to observe the middle of the brow when they start to curve – this is the ‘arch’, which will ‘help to open the eye up and round out the brow shape’.

Finally, think about the end:

‘Use a pencil to measure up from the outer corner of the eye upwards – that’s where your brow should end,’ Jared said.

Then, the expert recommends using a micro-pencil liner to fill in these details, and fake hair-like strokes.

As a result, your eyebrows should look more even and leave your whole face more in proportion.

PATCHY BROWS

The second type of eyebrow Benefit’s Global Brow Expert looked at was the patchy brow that might be short on hair in some places and wild in others.

‘For this, I would actually recommend a tint,’ Jared explained.

‘A brow tint is kind of like waking up with make up on. It’s going to adhere to those soft, fine hairs and help to naturally fill in the brows.’

When it comes to colour, the guru said you need to look at your hair tone and find a ‘deeper shade’ to mimic that.

‘What it’s going to do is start to frame the eyes and slim down the sides of the face,’ he said.

The best part about a brow tint is it means you don’t have to fill in your eyebrows every day. Perfect for the busy woman.

If your brows are untreated, you first need to trim the brow hairs above the hairline in order to enhance your natural shape (pictured: Jared Bailey)

If your hair has been highlighted, Jared said you need to add 3D brow tones to make it natural - you also need to use a pencil on your brows to give structure (stock image)

UNTOUCHED BROWS

The last type of eyebrow Jared Bailey took a look at was the untouched brow – also known as that rare thing of an eyebrow that has never been plucked, waxed, tamed or preened.

‘[With this], you want to trim the hairs that extend way past the hairline,’ he said.

Jared said that surprisingly your eyebrows will look fuller after this, because those wispy hairs ’cause more of a distraction’ and when they’re trimmed, you can enhance a shape.

Next, he said you should try a pencil to give ‘structure’.

While you may not know it, he also said if you have hair highlights, you need brow highlights:

‘If you colour treat your hair, you should be adding 3D brow tones to give it that same natural dimension’.
