A former teacher who heroically campaigned for breast cancer awareness has passed away.

Laura Plane, 37, who has been battling the disease since 2009, raised over £30,000 for charity.

Tragically the disease became incurable in 2014, but she continued to tirelessly campaign for breast cancer charity CoppaFeel.

Laura Plane, second left, helped cousin Jade Popplewell, third left, spot her breast cancer

Her cousin Jane, who was also diagnosed with breast cancer, managed to spot the disease early enough to receive life-saving treatment.

She credits Laura for making her aware enough to spot the disease early.

Laura raised over £30,000 for breast cancer charity. In recent weeks however she had to turn down an invitation to Buckingham Palace because of ill-health

Laura won a Pride of Plymouth award for her campaigning, and was invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace last week.

Sadly she was too unwell to make the event, the Plymouth Herald reported.

Friends and family posted heartfelt tributes to Laura online after she died.

Her husband John posted on Facebook: ‘I’m afraid I have to say Laura passed away today after her eight years of having cancer.

‘I don’t need to tell you what a wonderful person she was. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

‘Laura and I made a promise to each other. I promised her she would be the newest star in the sky and she promised she would shine the brightest. Like she did on earth.

‘There is a Laura-shaped hole in my heart today, but the light from her star will shine for ever more.

‘Ps. It took Plymouth’s worst ever lightning and thunderstorms for the way to be paved for Laura. If that’s not a testament to her spirit and tenacity, nothing is.’

The couple visited the Peruvian citadel of Machu Pichu to raise money for charity Coppa Feel.

Husband John said that there was a ‘Laura-shaped hole’ in his hear today

Friend Laura Price posted: ‘Laura was endlessly campaigning and running half marathons and epic feats, even through chemo and countless cancer treatments.

‘I only knew her for the last few years but she always inspired me to be better, and her relationship with Jon Plane was the kind of love we all dream about.’

Laura was initially cleared of cancer in 2010 – returning to work and becoming involved with CoppaFeel.

But four years later her back began to ache and doctors sent her for another scan.

Laura and Jade were inseparable as children and helped each other through their disease

The cousins have always been close, growing up and holidaying together

It was revealed that the cancer had spread to Laura’s bones and spine. She was told the disease was incurable.

Speaking at the time she said: ‘I knew it could go one way or the other. I could either focus on what was wrong with me, or I could live my life.

‘I now have regular scans to monitor.

It was then they told her the disease was incurable. I could either focus on what was wrong with me or I could live my life.’

Cousin Jade discovered that she had cancer around the same time that Lauren found out her cancer had progressed.

She said: ‘Before Laura had cancer I never checked my breasts, I didn’t know I needed to.

‘But with her charity work, she showed me how important it was.’
