It may be the right decision, but divorce can lead to stress, anxiety, depression and long-term health problems. Yet there are ways to avoid the toll it can take on the body, according to a new wave of self-help books. Here are five options (including one by Angelina Jolie’s lawyer)…

1. It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way: How To Divorce Without Destroying Your Family Or Bankrupting Yourself, by Laura Wasser

£20.06, St Martin’s Press

Wasser has represented Britney Spears, Johnny Depp and now Angelina Jolie, and presents practical and strategic advice for ‘safe passage’ through the perils of divorce.

2. Conscious Uncoupling: 5 Steps To Living Happily Even After, by Katherine Woodward Thomas

£14.99, Yellow Kite

The term ‘conscious uncoupling’ was made famous by Gwyneth Paltrow. However, its originator was Woodward Thomas, who guides couples through their split, with the goal to end in friendship and with happy co-parenting.

4. How To Have A Healthy Divorce: A Relate Guide, by Paula Hall

The ‘step-by-step guide’ includes strategies to deal with each challenge of a divorce, as well as how to incorporate the practical aspects of finance and legal matters into what is often seen as simply an emotional journey.

5. Getting Past Your Breakup: How To Turn A Devastating Loss Into The Best Thing That Ever Happened To You, by Susan J. Elliott

An Amazon bestseller on moving past the end of a marriage and working through the grief of losing a companion. Author Elliott is a qualified grief counsellor, and motivational speaker on marriage.
