From KFC to Pizza Hut. how calorie content of fast food differs around the world


When you stop off at a fast food restaurant you probably know that what you’ll be eating won’t be great for your health.

But now, it’s been revealed that the choice of where in the world you’re eating fast food can also have an impact on the calorie content of each dish.

From KFC to Pizza Hut, there can be vast differences on the same orders depending on whether you’re eating them in the UK, US or France.

While the burger in the UK weighs 192 grams and has 440 calories, Canada’s version of the burger weighs a whopping 216 grams and had 520 calories

Australia’s version of the burger is the lightest of the three options, weighing just 181g and containing 398 calories.

But in New Zealand the calorie content is the lowest, at 377. 

French fries at McDonald’s also vary from continent to continent.

A UK serving of fries weighs 114g and has 337 calories. Surprisingly a portion in the States weighs a relatively slimline 111g but then has 340 calorie – three more than in Britain. 

The largest portion belonged to the Japanese, whose medium French fries weigh 135 grams and has 454 calories.

Surprisingly it only has 200 calories.

The UK’s version weighs 52g and has 222 calories.

Popular sandwich restaurant Subway has the largest serving sizes in Hong Kong.

The Chinese six inch Italian BMT (Big Meat Tasty) weighs 228g and has 426 calories.

If you wanted to find the smallest six inch you should head to New Zealand where the serving size weighs only 213g and has 388 calories.

The UK’s serving size comes somewhere in the middle at 226g with 396 calories.

France is where you can find the smallest version of the burger, weighing 274g and clocking in at 597 calories.

Canada and the USA tie for the heaviest burger at 290g.

However, Canada’s burger has the most calories of the two, with 670. The USA has 650 calories in its Whopper burger.

Interestingly Japan’s burger is the second least heavy, at 278g, but has the most calories worldwide with 750.

Starbucks, one of the world’s most popular coffee companies, hides a surprising amount of sugar and fat within its drinks.

The chain’s mocha frappuccino blended coffee has 353 calories and 44.3g of sugar.

In the US this same drink has 410 calories and 15g of fat, almost a quarter of a woman’s daily allowance. It also containns a whopping 61 grams of sugar.

The classic hot chocolate with whipped cream is another sugary drink sold by the chain. In the UK the drink has 352 calories and a total of 32.4g of sugar.

A large pan pepperoni pizza from Pizza Hut has 2,810 calories in the UK and 3,700 calories in the US

The chain’s veggie option is also more calorific in the US, but not by so much

Incredibly there is an eye-raising difference of almost 1,000 calories between two pizzas of the same size from Pizza Hut.

Each large pizza has 10 slices, so the overall calorie count for the pizza is 2,810 in the UK.

The US’s version of the pizza has an enormous 3,700 calories, way over the recommended daily allowance of any human.

It also contains a rather grim 190g of fat.

The chain’s veggie option is also more calorific in the US, but not by so much. A medium vegetable supreme in the UK has 121 calories per slice. With eight slices per medium pizza that’s 968 per pizza.

The US version, the Veggie Lover’s, has 190 calories per slice, and 1,520 per pizza.
