Kourtney Kardashian Says She Refuses To Use This Common Household Appliance

In the post, the 37-year-old mom of three says that after she had her first child, Mason, now 7, she started doing health-related research and chose to eliminate the microwave from her kitchen.

“I read that toxins from plastic containers can be transferred to food when reheated (this applies to BPA-free plastic containers too),” she explained.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is not yet known how BPAs, which are used to manufacture polycarbonate plastics, affect people’s health when they are exposed to low environmental amounts. The CDC does say that BPA, in laboratory experiments with animals, has been shown to affect the reproductive system.

Kourtney’s fear was so great that she was afraid to even stick to using glass or stainless steel in the microwave, worried that something could be reheated in plastic when she wasn’t present. (Learn how bone broth can help you lose weight with Women’s Health’s Bone Broth Diet!)

As a result, Kourtney says she primarily uses her toaster oven in place of a microwave.

“It only takes a few more minutes and the toaster oven heats food evenly (whereas microwaves can sometimes heat food unevenly, so some parts are scorching hot and others are cold, which is obviously a concern for babies and children),” she explains.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star admits some of her knowledge may be unfounded—like that microwaves “leach nutrients from food” and that they “use radiation” for heating—but says, “when it comes to my family I play it safe.”
