At just seven years old Makayla Maloney is already eyeing up her first triathlon.

Makayla, affectionately known as ‘Nugg’, is competing in a triathlon with the hope of raising at least $5,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

She will be required to complete a gruelling junior course that consists of a 50 metre swim, a two kilometre cycle and a 500 metre run.

Makayla was inspired to take on the Triathlon Pink event in Perth after watching her mother Kelly complete it in 2013.

Kelly said the event was an inspiring way to support those impacted by the disease, which affects about 15,000 Australian women.

‘It is a natural progression that Nugg is now old enough to participate in the event herself and give back to people in the community who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Makayla had been hard at training in the lead up to the event, completing a duathlon – which involved a 500m run followed by a two kilometre cycle and another 250m run in October and supplementing that with boxing.

Kelly said she was immensely proud of her daughter and was excited to see her compete in the event.

‘I can’t wait to see her smiling face running over the finish line.’

The Triathlon Pink is a fundraising event for the National Breast Cancer Foundation that will be held on November 20.
