A staggering ten per cent of school children believe parsnips grow on trees and pears only grow in pairs, a new study has revealed.

One in ten have no idea peas are grown in pods and believe ham does not come from pigs.

Seven per cent of eight-year-olds even believe sausage rolls are made by rolling sausages down hills covered in flour.

A fifth of kids aged seven to eleven are not aware butter comes from an animal, with seven per cent of eight-year-olds believing it is made in supermarkets.

Six per cent of eight-year-olds think that chocolate grows on trees in perfect squares.

Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, founder of Genius Gluten Free, said: ‘It is so important that children learn about where their food comes from and different dietary requirements from a young age, and it’s equally important they are aware of the symptoms associated with different food allergies.

The research has also shown food allergies to be having a negative impact on children in the classroom, with half saying classmates with allergies missed out on enjoying birthday cake.

A further 14 per cent said classmates missed out on sandwiches in their lunch-box.

It was revealed that a fifth of children never help cook meals from scratch at home – which perhaps explains why over a third do not know how simple food items such as bread are made.

Despite the fact 80 per cent of British schoolchildren now have a classmate with an allergy, over half said they had never been taught about allergies by a teacher.

Almost a quarter of kids think those with an allergy to eggs can still eat them if they are scrambled or in an omelette, and a fifth believe people with a nut allergy can still eat peanut butter.

Gluten in particular appears to be a foreign word for many British children as 56 per cent have no idea what it actually is, many believing it to be a type of glue or sugar.

The research was carried out among 2,010 children aged 7 to 11 and was funded by Genius Gluten Free in collaboration with Allergy Adventures.

Hailey Phillips, Founder of Allergy Adventures, said: ‘So many children across the UK now have from some form of allergy, and diagnosis can be a daunting and confusing experience both for them and their parents.’
