Meaning, “it draws water out, helping to dry out oily pimples and bring them to the surface. While [the pads] don’t specifically contain antibiotics for acne, they’re effective for absorbing excess fluid and act as a barrier to stop picking,” she says.

Ideally, if you get one of those large, painful pimples and just screams out “look at me” from your face, you’d make a quick appointment with your dermatologist for a cortisone injection, which will shrink that sucker down to size quickly and without scarring, notes Farber.

If that’s not an option and you use one of these pimple patches, best to hedge your bets by icing the pimple for a few minutes to lessen inflammation, then apply a thin layer of acne-fighters containing salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur, Farber recommends. Finally, top it off with a pimple patch. “Layering medications with pimple patches at home can be most effective for bigger cysts,” she says.

And one more thing: These pads tend to sell out fast. If they’re available now, best to snatch them up before you have to wait again.
