A mother whose weight dropped to eight stone when she survived on just 500 calories a day has beaten anorexia to become a champion bodybuilder.

Maggie Lane, 25, who works in food promotions and is from Perth, Western Australia, would only consume one meal and four cans of Diet Coke a day – leaving her with a skeletal frame.

However, after a friend introduced her to weight lifting, Maggie is now a healthy 11 stone and has since taken part in six competitions and has been crowned champion.

Now, Maggie eats more than 3,000 calories a day, and weighs three stone more than before – and she hopes to inspire other young women to make healthy changes to their lifestyles.

Before she became a bodybuilder, Maggie endured intense workouts every day to burn off the few calories she did eat.

When she fell pregnant in 2012 with son, Noah Hyland, she even continued to diet during her pregnancy, which concerned doctors.

Maggie knew she needed to change her ways in a desperate bid to become a good role model for her unborn son.

Maggie says that she can now see how unhealthy she was when she was thin. She was constantly exhausted and relied on caffeine for energy

Maggie said: ‘I lived off Diet Coke and coffees, I was obsessed with being thin and weighing as little as possible.

‘Looking back at photos now, I can see how unhealthy I was, my body was constantly exhausted and I relied on caffeine for energy.

‘Even when I fell pregnant in 2012 I still tried to diet and limit how much I was eating.

‘But I soon realised my lifestyle needed to change, I wasn’t thinking about myself anymore, I needed to be healthy for my baby.

‘I started eating three meals per day and I stopped being over strict with carbohydrates and sugary snacks.

‘But I still wasn’t happy, I felt depressed and frustrated but my life changed forever when a friend introduced weight training to me at the gym.

‘Once Noah was born I was able to start lifting heavy weights and before I knew it, I was entering bodybuilding competitions.

‘I was so nervous for my first one in 2014 but since then I have entered another four and even won the overall title.’

Now Maggie weighs three stone more and is happier than ever before with her body both mentally and physically.

She added: ‘I was always weighing myself when I was really thin but I’ve realised it means nothing.

‘It’s how you feel and what you look like in clothes that matters, I finally have a great relationship with food.

‘I would only ever eat lunch but now I’m constantly eating and snacking on healthy foods, I have around five small meals per day.

‘I wanted to be a good role model to Noah and I feel like all my changes are really paying off.

‘He will make healthy choices now instead of always reaching for crisps and chocolate because he sees me eating eggs, vegetables and fruit.

‘Noah always points at my trophies from competitions and says he wants big muscles when he’s older.

‘I train at the gym for an hour and a half every day but instead of trying to do as much cardio as possible, I use weights to improve my strength.

‘I don’t judge myself on the scales anymore and I will never allow society to make me feel worthless again.

‘I was aspiring to all the models and super thin celebrities but I no longer feel those pressures and I’m happy in my own skin.’

Maddie has since set up an Instagram page to document her journey and help inspire others.

She added: ‘I want to show other young people that you do not need to conform to what society says, eating healthily is for yourself and will make you feel 100 times better.’
