Women in the South East masturbate more than those in any other part of the country, a poll has revealed.

In fact their libidos are so high that they even outperform men.

While London men topped the frequency chart, with an average of six times a week, women in the South East indulged seven times a week.

Women in the UK also spent three times as much on sex toys in the last five years as their male counterparts.

The study polled nearly 3,000 adults aged 18-50 across 12 regions of the UK. Around 50 per cent were in a relationship, the other half single.

Initially people were asked if they felt they masturbated more or less than the average person – and 77 per cent of women said they felt they indulged in the activity more often that other females.

Some 68 per cent of men said they believed they masturbated less than the average male.

Next, they were asked if they owned any sex toys or accessories, with 89 per cent of women and 41 per cent of men admitting they did.

The survey also found that women were most likely to masturbate on the weekend, while men spread the time out over the week.

George Charles from www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, which carried out the research, said: ‘It’s fantastic and very healthy to see that women are becoming more and more comfortable with their sexuality and masturbation.

‘A decade ago the figures for women would probably be a lot lower.

‘It’s also interesting to note that those in London seem to make a lot of time for themselves, maybe it’s the stress of living in such a busy city?’

WHY MASTURBATION IS GOOD FOR OUR HEALTH

Masturbation can ward off a host of illnesses, from cystitis, diabetes to prostate cancer, experts claim.

Anthony Santella, a public health scientist at the University of Sydney and his colleague Spring Chenoa Cooper, a senior lecturer, are on a mission to set the record straight about masturbation – and highlight all the health benefits it can bring.

Writing for The Conversation, they said: ‘For women, masturbation can help prevent cervical infections and urinary tract infections through the process of “tenting,” or the opening of the cervix that occurs as part of the arousal process.

‘Tenting stretches the cervix, and thus the cervical mucous. This enables fluid circulation, allowing cervical fluids full of bacteria to be flushed out.’

They add that engaging in self-pleasure can also lower the risk of type-2 diabetes – though this association may also be explained by greater overall health.

It can also reduce insomnia through hormonal and tension release, and increase pelvic floor strength through the contractions that happen during orgasm.

Then there is cancer prevention. Studies have shown that men who regularly have sex may have a lower risk of prostate cancer – perhaps due to the release of toxins from the prostate gland – and they say that masturbation achieves this same effect.

The Australian pair also argue that it can help prevent depression, due to the ‘happy’ endorphins produced.

And it increases levels of the hormone cortisol slightly, which can give the immune system a boost.

They add that masturbation is also ‘the most convenient method for maximising orgasms’ – and that people who orgasm regularly have ‘reduced stress, reduced blood pressure, increased self-esteem, and reduced pain’.

Last, but not least, they make the point that there’s also no risk of disappointing a partner – of the dreaded performance anxiety. And there’s no risk of unwanted pregnancies or STIs.
