Starbucks’ ‘liquid Fudgsicle’-inspired Frappuccino has nearly 17 teaspoons of sugar

The new Starbucks Frappuccino is delighting fans of the ice-blended drink with its ‘double dose of mocha sauce’ but its sweet indulgence comes at a price.

A grande serving of the Double Double Fudge Bar Frappuccino with whole milk and whipped cream has an enormous 67g of sugar – the equivalent of nearly 17 teaspoons – nearly triple the recommended daily allowance.

The decadent drink, which has been compared to a liquid Fudgsicle, contains vanilla syrup, coffee and milk blended with ice and topped with ‘chocolaty whipped cream’.

It went on sale on Saturday and the coffee chain said it will be available at select stores in the US and Canada ‘for the next few weeks’.

According to World Health Organization guidelines, adults who have a ‘healthy’ body weight consuming around 2,000 calories a day should ‘ideally’ limit their sugar intake to less than five per cent of their daily energy – equivalent to six teaspoons.

For a 154 pound man to burn the drink’s 460 calories would take nearly one hour of aerobics or an hour of vigorous walking at 4.5 miles per hour.  

The drink contains 17g of fat – 26 per cent of recommended daily intake – 10g of which is saturated.

Despite its nutritional implications, the drinks is proving popular among Frappuccino fans who have been sharing their appreciation online.

‘Not a Chocolate Lover but Oh My! This Double Double Fudge Bar Frappe taste like a liquid fudgsicle … Yummo,’ wrote ‘Marie4mets’ on Instagram.

Another user, ‘J_do3’, posted a picture of the drink with the caption: ‘I wasn’t late to class this morning, but if I were, this would’ve been a reason worth being late!’ 

Starbucks said the new drink is part of a ‘diverse menu’ and that calorie contents are displayed in stores and online. 

A spokeswoman told Daily Mail Online: ‘Starbucks aims to help its customers make nutritional choices that are right for them by offering a diverse menu, many drink customization options, and nutritional information on our menu boards in stores and online. 

‘Additionally Starbucks also offers a variety of cold, refreshing beverages including our Cold Brew Coffee which has 5 calories and 0g sugar in a standard Grande 16 oz size, or an Iced Caffè Americano which is 15 calories, 0 grams of sugar in standard Grande 16 oz size.’
