Backlit tablets help people read better.

If you have bad vision, consider swapping your newspaper, book, or old Kindle for an iPad or other backlit tablet, says a new study from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in New Jersey. Researchers tested the reading speed of 100 people who have trouble seeing despite wearing glasses, while they read the ‘New York Times’ on paper, on a Kindle with no backlight (new Kindles are now backlit), and on an iPad. Almost all participants read faster and more comfortably on the iPad, because backlighting makes text clearer and sharper. “People with visual impairments should try the iPad because it gives them a real edge for things like reading a newspaper,” says lead author Dr. Daniel Roth. “Any laptop or tablet that has illumination will give a reading advantage.”
