These 6 Tips Will Make Your Blowout Last a Week

When you spend upwards of $30 on blowout, you probably want to make it last for more than just one day. So we asked Shelesta Sims, a stylist at ‘do Blow Dry Bar in Cleveland, for her best tips on how to make your blowout last for days after you hit the salon.

Go Hands-Free
When your hair looks amazing, it’s hard to keep your fingers out of it—but Sims says this is the top thing you need to stop doing to keep your blowout going for days. “When you touch your hair, it causes it to lose volume and stimulates your scalp to produce oil,” she says. Institute a no-touching policy to keep your locks bouncy and gorgeous for days.

Fight Humidity
Sometimes the weather just does not want to work in your favor. Check the weather before your appointment to see what the dew point is going to be. On high-humidity days, Sims suggests asking your stylist to use a smoothing gel. Her favorite is Aquage Straightening Ultragel ($20.99, Walgreens).

Invest In A Scrunchie
When the wind is high and blowing your hair the wrong way, the best thing to do is to tie it up and out of harm’s way. “You can prevent hair from being ruined by putting your hair in a bun or loose ponytail,” says Sims. For a super loose, kink-free hold, find a trusty ’90s throwback: a scrunchie.

Stop Sweat
“The biggest enemy for a blowout is moisture,” says Sims. “Moisture can make a beautiful blow out look like you never had your hair done.” But just because you’ve had a blowout doesn’t mean you have to skip the gym. Sims says wearing a sweat-absorbent headband around your hairline will help prevent perspiration from weighing down your roots.

Sleep On a Satin Pillowcase
A girl’s gotta sleep, but your head hitting the pillow at night can cause tangled tresses, flat sides, and limp curls. Don’t worry; Sims says that you don’t have to sleep sitting up to keep your hair intact. “Sleeping on a satin pillowcase helps prevent breakage and keep your style in tact while sleeping,” she says. Problem solved.

Make Dry Shampoo Your BFF
Dry shampoo is truly a miracle worker—it absorbs oil while providing volume, and best of all, you get to skip the shampoo. “Dry shampoo works wonders for prolonging the life of a blowout,” says Sims. She recommends spraying it at the roots and working it in at night before you go to bed, which gives the product the whole night to soak up excess oil. Try Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle ($19.50, drugstore.com).
