SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Republican state senator in Utah is pushing a resolution to declare pornography a public health crisis.
Sen. Todd Weiler, a Mormon, contends that children are being exposed to pornography at an earlier age and that viewing the images and videos lead to relationship problems.
His points echo arguments made around the county in a renewed push led by conservative religious groups as porn becomes more accessible on smartphones and tablets.
Defenders of pornography say critics are spouting hyperbole.
Dr. Carl Shubs, a California psychologist, says pornography can be a healthy sexual outlet for people. He says calling it a public health crisis is way off.
Utah lawmakers are scheduled to discuss the resolution Friday afternoon in a legislative hearing in Salt Lake City.
