City of Winnipeg officials have confirmed community paramedics will soon be available to residents.
Last month, CBC reported the city was launching a system to reduce the number of non-emergency patients from tying up ambulances.
The system will see calls deemed non-urgent by 911 operators referred to community paramedics, who will treat people on-scene out of smaller vehicles.
The vehicles won’t be able to transport patients.
According to city officials, more than half of all emergency department visits are for non-urgent issues that could be dealt with outside of the hospital.
