Woman with Mysterious Beard Seeks Answers & Help

Diamond has come to The Doctors to get answers and hopefully help with her beard, something she has to shave every day.

The 23-year-old began developing facial hair while in high school and was constantly teased by other kids about it. The looks and comments she receives have caused her to become extremely self-conscious about her appearance. In order to get ready each day, she spends 3 hours prepping, shaving and applying makeup in order to feel comfortable leaving the house. Her condition has even stopped her from seeing her family as often as she would like along with sending her into a deep depression.

“I feel like my excessive hair is stopping me from being the person I truly am,” she explains, saying that she has not seen a doctor about her condition as she is too embarrassed by it.

The Doctors help her take the first step towards solving her issue, having her meet with OB/GYN, Dr. Nita Landry, who performed a physical exam, an ultrasound on her ovaries, and did blood work on her.

A brave Diamond joins ER physician Dr. Travis Stork and Dr. Nita to find out the results of her tests and exam. Dr. Nita reveals to Diamond that she has PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). In addition to extra body and facial hair, PCOS symptoms can include small cysts on the ovaries, period problems, lack of ovulation, acne, weight gain and trouble losing weight, depression, thinning hair, skin tags, and hormone imbalances. Dr. Nita notes that sometimes people with PCOS are prone to high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.
