son<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The hospital did not say where the family is from except for South Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I&#8217;ve treated amoeba cases in the past and they are all fatal. So this is a story we need to tell about Sebastian DeLeon,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Minutes after inhaling the bacteria, Sebastian developed a headache so severe he couldn&#8217;t tolerate anyone touching him, and symptoms of meningitis, the doctors explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/08\/05\/13\/36E757C000000578-0-image-a-9_1470399647613.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>PICTURED: Girl, 11, &#8216;waiting to\u00a0join the angels in&#8230;<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/06\/23\/01\/35923D2D00000578-0-image-a-30_1466640248906.jpg\" width=\"62\" height=\"60\" \/><span>Female rafter dies from deadly amoeba contracted at the U.S&#8230;.<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">His parents, from out of state, rushed him to Florida Hospital for Children where he was diagnosed with the infection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The only drug known to treat the infection &#8211; an experimental medication called miltefosine &#8211; is made by an Orlando company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The drug arrived at the hospital within 12 minutes of Sebastian&#8217;s diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Doctors cooled him, gave him a breathing tube, and put him into a chemically-induced coma for days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">During that time they habitually took fluid samples to test for the amoeba and sent daily samples to the CDC who corroborated their diagnoses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Eventually, the samples came back negative for naegleria fowleri.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\">                                <span>WHAT IS NAEGLERIA FOWLERI?\u00a0<\/span>                            <\/h3>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-8942ae06297546b\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/08\/23\/16\/3784458400000578-3754844-Naegleria_fowleri_is_ingested_through_the_nose-a-16_1471967532088.jpg\" height=\"409\" width=\"624\" alt=\"Naegleria fowleri (pictured) is ingested through the nose\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Naegleria fowleri (pictured) is ingested through the nose<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Naegleria fowleri is commonly referred to as the &#8216;brain-eating amoeba&#8217; as it can cause a rare and devastating infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But the infection is very rare, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been about 35 cases reported in the U.S. in the last decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The single-celled organism is commonly found in warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs, as well as in soil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It usually infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose. Once the amoeba enters the nose, it travels to the brain where it causes PAM, which is usually fatal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Infection typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwater places, like lakes and rivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In very rare instances, Naegleria infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources (such as inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated and contaminated tap water) enters the nose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">You cannot get infected from swallowing water contaminated with Naegleria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold\">Source: CDC<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In tears, the doctor explained the next step.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We decided to take the breathing tube out and within hours he spoke,&#8217; he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Since then he has done tremendously well.
