(Jeffrey Arguedas\/EPA)<\/p>\n<p>Some mosquitoes in Miami Beach have tested positive for the Zika virus,\u00a0Florida officials say.<\/p>\n<p>Florida&#8217;s agriculture department said Thursday that the virus was detected in three mosquito samples from a small area in Miami Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0&#8220;This find is disappointing, but not surprising,&#8221; the state&#8217;s agriculture commissioner<\/a>,\u00a0Adam Putnam, said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>The number of non-travel-related Zika infections in humans has grown to 47 in Miami-Dade County since the first case was identified just over a month ago.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Planning a trip to a Zika-infected area? Know the rules before you pay<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The surveillance tests were conducted as part of an investigation by\u00a0Florida&#8217;s health department into local transmission of the virus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samples were sent to the U.S.\u00a0Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Florida Gulf Coast University for confirmation, the department said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It says\u00a0more than 2,470 mosquito samples\u00a0have been tested since May, and these three were the first to test positive.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Health officials say mosquito control is a key way to stem the outbreak, along with educating people about limiting their exposure to the insects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere on Thursday,\u00a0China intensified its\u00a0checks on people and goods arriving from Singapore,\u00a0as an outbreak of the Zika virus in the small city-state was\u00a0confirmed to have spread to at least one person in neighbouring\u00a0Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<h2>Singapore confirms 31 more Zika cases<\/h2>\n<p>The government said earlier that half of the 115 cases\u00a0reported previously were foreigners, mainly from China, India\u00a0and Bangladesh, and most had already recovered. Many of them are\u00a0believed to be among the hundreds of thousands of migrant\u00a0workers in Singapore&#8217;s construction and marine industries.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;We have been tracking Zika for a while now, and knew it was\u00a0only a matter of time before it reached Singapore,&#8221; Prime\u00a0Minister Lee Hsien Loong posted on his Facebook page. &#8220;Our best\u00a0defence is to eradicate mosquitoes and destroy breeding\u00a0habitats, all over Singapore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>Malaysia confirmed its first case of Zika infection, in a\u00a0woman who had recently visited Singapore.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>The outbreak and travel warnings come just two weeks before\u00a0the Singapore F1 motor-racing Grand Prix, a major sporting and\u00a0tourist draw. Race promoter Singapore GP has said planning for\u00a0the event is going ahead &#8220;as per normal&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>The World Health Organisation, which has declared Zika an\u00a0international public health emergency, was holding a regular\u00a0meeting of its Zika emergency committee on Thursday to review\u00a0the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>There is no vaccine or treatment for Zika, which is a close\u00a0cousin of dengue and chikungunya and causes mild fever, rash and\u00a0red eyes.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>An estimated 80 per cent of people infected have no\u00a0symptoms.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>The WHO has also linked Zika to\u00a0Guillain-Barr\u00e9?, a rare neurological syndrome that causes\u00a0temporary paralysis in adults.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mosquitoes from Miami Beach have tested positive for Zika in an area with increased trapping and intensified mosquito control measures, Florida officials say.
