patients<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Our study suggests that the eye could be a reservoir for Zika virus,&#8217; said Dr. Michael Diamond of Washington University St. Louis, whose paper was published in the journal Cell Reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We need to consider whether people with Zika have infectious virus in their eyes and how long it actually persists.&#8217;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>\n<p>          <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Organisation&#8230;<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For the study, the team infected adult mice under the skin, resembling the way people get infected by mosquito bites, and found live virus in the eyes a week later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When tested 28 days later, the tears of infected mice contained genetic material from the virus, but not infectious virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers said their findings raise the possibility that Zika could be spread through contact with the tears of infected people, but said that would have to be proven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We are planning studies in people to find out whether infectious virus persists in the cornea or other compartments of the eye, because that would have implications for corneal transplantation,&#8217; said Dr. Rajendra Apte, a senior author of the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Other blood-borne viruses such as herpes simplex virus have been transmitted accidentally through corneal transplants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Although principally spread by mosquitoes, Zika has been shown to persist in sites of the body where the immune system is less active, including semen, vaginal fluid, saliva and now, possibly, tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">That could help account for why Zika has spread so quickly, outpacing what might be expected if the virus were only carried by mosquitoes, Diamond said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Sexual transmission is probably not playing a major role, but it could be some other bodily fluid &#8211;  saliva, or urine or tears,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Zika infections in pregnant women have been shown to cause microcephaly &#8211; a severe birth defect in which the head and brain are undersized &#8211; as well as other brain abnormalities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has since confirmed more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In adults, Zika infections have also been linked to a rare neurological syndrome known as Guillain-Barre, as well as other neurological disorders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\">                                <span>WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ZIKA\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"health-ccox mol-style-large mol-style-bold\">WHAT IS ZIKA?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Zika (ZEE&#8217;-ka) virus was first discovered in monkey in Uganda in 1947 &#8211; its name comes from the Zika forest where it was first discovered.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold health-ccox mol-style-large\">HOW IS IT SPREAD?<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold\">MOSQUITOES<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is typically transmitted through bites from the Aedes species of mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They are aggressive feeders, commonly biting multiple people in quick succession, fueling the spread of the virus. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They are most active during mid-morning and then again between late afternoon and nightfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold\">SEX<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Scientists have found Zika can be transmitted sexually &#8211; from both men and women.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Couples should abstain or wear condoms for eight weeks if either partner has traveled to a country with a Zika outbreak, regardless of whether they have symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold\">MOTHER TO BABY<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A mother can pass the virus to her unborn baby during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are two ways this can happen: through the placenta, and through the amniotic sac.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Since the virus can live in the womb lining, there is a chance the baby can become infected during birth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-large mol-style-bold health-ccox\">ARE THERE SYMPTOMS?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The majority of people infected with Zika virus will not experience symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Those that do, usually develop mild symptoms &#8211; fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes &#8211; for no more than a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There is no specific treatment for the virus and there is currently no vaccine.<span class=\"mol-style-large health-ccox mol-style-bold\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-large health-ccox mol-style-bold\">CAN THE SPREAD BE STOPPED?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Individuals can protect themselves from mosquito bites by using insect repellents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They could also wear long sleeves and long pants &#8211; especially during daylight, when the mosquitoes tend to be most active, health officials say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Eliminating breeding spots and controlling mosquito populations can help prevent the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p
