Cheap pet food, pampered lifestyles and lack of exercise are all blamed for a sudden rise in the number of pets developing the condition<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\"><span>THE SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">If your pet is eight or older, and you answer yes to one or more of these questions, consult your vet:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Does your pet pace or wander aimlessly, finding it hard to settle?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Does it stare blankly as if unaware of surroundings?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Does it fail to recognise or respond to familiar people such as family and friends?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Does it get lost or confused in the home or garden?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Is it forgetful \u2014 for example, forgetting to go to the toilet or repeatedly seeking attention?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Does it vocalise repeatedly or for no reason?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Many owners could find the symptoms distressing because they do not realise what is behind them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts believe a third of dogs suffer some sort of mental decline from the age of eight, rising to two-thirds at 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Studies, including one from the University of Edinburgh, suggest that half of all cats over the age of 15 and a third of those aged 11 to 14 suffer from dementia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Professor Holger Volk,from the Royal Veterinary College in London, said: \u2018I don&#8217;t think that people really realise how serious this problem is.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The average dog now lives to the age of 12 and a cat to 14 thanks to the care they receive from their owners. Just as we see health problems among people who are less active so we see the same problems with their pets eating more and getting less exercise and this may lead to an increase in dementia.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He advises that owners ensure their pets keep fit and feed them high quality food, rich in fatty acids, saying: \u2018Neurons in the brain go into decline with dementia and the more you exercise the more they remain active.\u2019<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\">                                <span>HOW DEMENTIA CAN IMPACT YOUR PET<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Like most people who lose a beloved pet, Nicole is grieving for her cat Poppy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The playful tabby arrived in Nicole\u2019s life 15 years ago as a lively kitten and soon became a big part of her family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Poppy was always such a boisterous little thing,\u2019 says Nicole, 38, an insurance underwriter from Epping, Essex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018She loved being out in the garden and every summer I\u2019d look out of the window and see her flying through the air trying to catch butterflies. Then at night she\u2019d be so loving and would curl up close to me on my bed.
