50 per cent closure of the wound from 17 days to just 11 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And after 24 days, the wounds were completely healed, whereas wounds dressed with normal bandages take at least another week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Previous research has shown that up to 40 per cent of diabetic ulcers take at least three months to mend and in around 14 per cent of slows, the damaged skin is starved of the oxygen-rich blood and immune cells it needs to mend itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These wounds often get bigger because bacteria in the wound feed off the raised levels of glucose in the blood and flourish, breaking down surrounding healthy tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The risks are heightened by the fact diabetes patients often have nerve damage in the feet so they feel little pain and are often unaware they have tiny injuries until they become infected and harder to heal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Last week, figures revealed that more than 7,000 people a year in the UK now have leg, foot or toe amputations due to diabetes complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There are a range of developed the spray-on bandage which contains a protein called stromal cell derived factor-1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This is a protein naturally produced by the body to recruit special cells which repair damaged skin and tissue by generating the growth of new blood vessels to boost oxygen supply to the wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In diabetics with poor blood flow, the body\u2019s own supply of these cells often fails to reach its destination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Scientists designed the bandage to gradually release the healing protein over a period of several weeks, mimicking the way the body\u2019s own repair process works.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\"><span>HEALING WOUNDS USING &#8216;REPROGRAMMED SKIN CELLS&#8217;<\/span> study, researchers took samples from diabetes patients and reprogrammed the faulty skin cells using viruses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Results showed that it was possible to \u2018reboot\u2019 the diabetic skin cells so that they looked and behaved just like normal fibroblasts, cells in the skin involved in wound healing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Writing in the journal Cellular Reprogramming, they say this discovery could help develop a new treatment which \u2018regenerates\u2019 hard-to-heal wounds by using the patients\u2019 own skin cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a recent study, scientists gave mice with 6mm-wide wounds either standard gauze dressings or sprayed the new gel on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They monitored wound healing for nearly a month, and results in The Journal of Controlled Release showed healing was speeded up by at least a week compared to those with a gauze dressing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers said another major benefit is likely to be that the liquid bandage can easily be dissolved with salt water when it needs to be changed or checked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Currently, peeling dressings off open wounds can be very painful and potentially harmful if it also removes delicate new tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Professor Guillermo Ameer, who developed the bandage, said: \u2018Patients have to change the wound dressing often, which can rip off healing tissue and re-injure the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Our material conforms to the shape and dimensions of the wound and can be rinsed off with cooled salt water.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers hope to test the bandage on diabetes patients soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Emily Burns of Diabetes UK, says: \u2018Foot ulcers are a significant complication of diabetes which can lead to amputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018It\u2019s very important that research continues to develop new ways of healing wounds
