were giving out prescriptions for conditions for which they might not even work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Reporters from the BBC programme 5 Live Investigates were able to get inappropriate antibiotics from several websites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One reporter, posing as a 16-year-old girl, was able to get three different sets of drugs &#8211; for a dental infection, an ear infection and a urinary tract infection &#8211; all from the same website, all in the space of 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The website, which is not named by the programme, even gave her a choice of antibiotics for her supposed dental infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">NHS guidelines state that drugs should be prescribed for dental problems only if a patient has significant facial swelling or a condition that shows their immune system has been damaged, but neither of those symptoms was brought up in the reporter\u2019s online Metronidazole for \u00a338 &#8211; around \u00a330 more than the cost of an NHS prescription.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Posing as a male with an ear infection, the reporter first had to fill in a questionnaire including questions about whether he had symptoms of a vaginal infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Faye Kirkland, a GP who worked on the programme, said: \u2018They\u2019re not even the kind of antibiotics that I would even consider giving to a patient because they don\u2019t kill the bugs that typically cause the problem.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>    <img company has said it has since deactivated consultations for ear infections because of a \u2018system glitch\u2019, and it will regularly review treatments provided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts are worried that the overuse of antibiotics means that superbugs are rapidly becoming resistant to any drug, a problem which will kill 10million people a year &#8211; more than cancer &#8211; by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The more that antibiotics are used the more resistant bacteria become to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Superbugs are already breeding at a rapid rate, with increasing numbers of germs evolving to become untreatable with what were previously effective drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts warn that medicine will be taken back to the \u2018dark ages\u2019 with a few years if antibiotics are rendered ineffective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">An alarming study published by Bristol University in March found that 48 per cent of youngsters in Britain with a common bladder complaint were carrying germs resistant to ampicillin, a go-to drug used for a variety of illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But while GPs are under huge pressure to reduce prescriptions, websites seem to be freely doling them out with few checks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Research by BBC 5 live suggests that online searches for antibiotics have risen by 52 per cent in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">GMC chief executive Niall Dickson said the overprescribing of antibiotics \u2018risks the health of us all\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Our prescribing guidance makes it absolutely clear that doctors may prescribe only when they have adequate knowledge of the patient\u2019s health, and are satisfied that the medicines serve the patient\u2019s needs,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The guidance also makes it clear that they should take account of clinical guidelines published by established organisations with appropriate expertise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Professor Maureen Baker, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said patients are going online pharmacies to seek prescriptions, as their regular doctors refuse to give them the drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said: \u2018We saw a reduction of 2.6 million prescriptions by GPs last year alone, so it\u2019s concerning that patients are increasingly turning to other means to obtain antibiotics, and the ease with which patients can get prescriptions through online pharmacies and online doctors will only serve to hinder our ongoing efforts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Government\u2019s former superbugs tsar, Lord Jim O\u2019Neill, said the findings were \u2018disturbing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Much of the time when antibiotics are prescribed they are not necessary and we need to stop demanding them from doctors and circumnavigating and going on the internet to use them, thinking \u201cI\u2019m miraculously saved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Some illnesses still can\u2019t be saved by an
