Katrina Percy has left her GP advisory role at the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust following concerns from the public and patients<\/p>\n
A much-criticised health trust has said Katrina Percy has left her GP advisory role following concerns from the public and patients.<\/p>\n
It follows Ms Percy’s decision to stand down from the top position at The Southern Health NHS<\/a> Foundation Trust.<\/p>\n
She resigned last month as chief executive after saying her job had become untenable following repeated calls for her to resign over the trust’s failure to investigate hundreds of deaths.<\/p>\n
But she was given a new alternative role within the organisation on the same salary of around \u00a3240,000 a year\u00a0to ‘provide strategic advice to local GP leaders’.<\/p>\n
Ms Percy will receive \u00a3190,000 as her settlement package – the equivalent of one year’s salary, a spokesman for the Trust said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Trust said in a statement: ‘Following the recent announcement that Katrina Percy will take on a regional strategic advisory role, we have received correspondence from the public, patients and families expressing their concerns.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘We have listened to all of this feedback and reflected.<\/p>\n
‘Both the trust and NHS Improvement believe it is no longer possible for Katrina to continue in her new advisory role.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But she was given a new alternative role within the organisation<\/p>\n ‘We hope that the organisation can now continue to focus on our primary objective: delivering the best possible care to all those we look after.’\u00a0<\/p>\n The trust’s interim chairman Tim Smart previously told the BBC the new role will address work that ‘needed to be done’.<\/p>\n Asked if the job existed previously he confirmed it did not, and said Ms Percy was the only candidate and was ‘uniquely qualified for it’.<\/p>\n He also revealed that it had not been advertised to the public.<\/p>\n Dismissing suggestions the move was a ‘fix’ he previously said: ‘That is not the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘The case is that over the next few months the work that we’ve asked Katrina to do needed to be done in any event.’\u00a0<\/p>\n Commenting on the news of Ms Percy’s change of job at the time, Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb said: ‘Reports that she will move into another well-paid job advising GPs on strategy are deeply concerning, and will aggravate the sense of injustice felt by the families of those who lost their lives.’<\/p>\n The trust has been the subject of independent Government reviews since it was revealed it failed to investigate the unexpected deaths of hundreds of patients between 2011 and 2015.<\/p>\n In October, a jury inquest ruled that neglect contributed to the death of Mr Sparrowhawk, who drowned after an epileptic seizure at Slade House in Headington, Oxfordshire.<\/p>\n Drowned: Miss Percy\u00a0first came under scrutiny following the death of 18-year-old Connor Sparrowhawk (pictured), who drowned in the bath at a trust facility in 2013<\/p>\n In April, inspectors concluded that the trust was still failing to protect patients from risk of harm.<\/p>\n Care Quality Commission inspectors found that robust arrangements to probe incidents, including deaths, had not been put in place, resulting in ‘missed opportunities’ to prevent similar events.\u00a0<\/p>\n The mental health trust provides services to 45,000 people across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.<\/p>\n It employs around 9,000 staff at more than 200 sites, including community hospitals, health centres, inpatient units and social care services.<\/p>\n Mark Aspinall, who resigned from the council of governors of the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust in April, previously said the decision to create a new job for Ms Percy was ‘strange’.<\/p>\n He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme at the time: ‘The idea that the role has been created purely to move Katrina Percy sideways seems very strange.’<\/p>\n Mr Aspinall had said the whole board must take responsibility for the problems at the trust.<\/p>\n He added: ‘There are questions for the remainder of the board as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘You do start to wonder if there’s a bit of wagon-circling going on here and whether they are starting to worry about their own positions a little.’<\/p>\n John O’Connell, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, criticised the pay off Ms Percy has been given<\/p>\n ‘This golden goodbye can only be seen as a reward for failure,’ he said.<\/p>\n ‘Not only is it an insult to those who have suffered or lost a loved one because of mismanagement or incompetence, it is a also slap in the face for taxpayers who will be picking up the bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘People will want to know why anyone should be compensated when they stand down voluntarily and those responsible for this hugely expensive farce must be held to account to ensure nothing like this happens again.’\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Katrina Percy has left her GP advisory role at the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust following concerns from the public and patients A much-criticised health trust has said Katrina Percy has left her GP advisory role following concerns from the public and patients.
