She probably saved his life.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\"><b>WHAT IS TOTAL ANOMALOUS PULMONARY VENOUS DRAINAGE?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The cause of total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is unknown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In normal circulation, blood is sent from the right ventricle to pick up oxygen in the lungs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It then returns through the pulmonary veins to the left side of the heart, which sends blood out through the aorta and around the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But in cases of the defect, oxygen-rich blood returns from the lungs to the right atrium instead of the left side of heart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In other words, blood simply circles to and from the lungs and never gets out to the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For the infant to live, the defect must be surgically repaired in early infancy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Born  in May this year, he was\u00a0immediately taken to Hillingdon Hospital where medical staff believed he was healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But senior midwife Stella Milanian noticed the unusual blue marks which warranted testing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He was taken to Great Ormond Street Hospital for open heart surgery when he was just six days old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Tests revealed he had total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The pulmonary veins, which drain blood from the lungs, should be connected to the left atrium of the heart &#8211;
