a known risk factor of the condition &#8211; to the developing child, experts believe<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS EPILEPSY?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain and causes repeated seizures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is estimated to affect more than 500,000 people in the UK. This means that almost one in every 100 people has the condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The condition can start at any age, but it most often begins during childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It&#8217;s often not possible to identify a specific reason why someone develops the condition, but it can be caused by brain injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For example, epilepsy can be caused by strokes, brain tumours and severe head injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Treatment for epilepsy is used to control seizures, although not everyone with the condition will need to be treated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Source: NHS Choices\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For the study published in JAMA Neurology, researchers assessed more than 1.4 million live births to examine the BMI of women in their first trimester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Of those born, there were 7,592 children who had been diagnosed with epilepsy &#8211;
