The 2:23-minute trailer opens with Ellen, Lily’s character, guessing the number of calories in each component of her meal with worrying accuracy.<\/p>\n
Her sister tells her jokingly: ‘It’s like you have calorie Asperger’s.’<\/p>\n
Ellen’s mother then catches her with a huge cup of (presumably diet) soda and tells her: ‘That’s not breakfast’, to which Ellen shoots back that neither is coffee, which the mom, played by Carrie Preston, is brewing.<\/p>\n
The young woman keeps telling herself she’s got everything under control, even as she performs enough sit-ups to leave bruises on her emaciated back.<\/p>\n
Things take a darker turn when Ellen faints and lands herself in residential treatment, under the watchful eye of a straight-talking doctor (Keanu Reeves).<\/p>\n
The trailer then hits at what’s in store for Ellen: painful family therapy sessions, a friendship with an English-accented boy who admits he’s ‘really f*****g hungry’, and, maybe, a glimmer of hope for her recovery.<\/p>\n

Someone else tweeted: ‘Seriously f**k Netflix for making To the Bone. Even the trailer is triggering. What do you think it’ll do to its impressionable viewers?’<\/p>\n
Another Twitter user called the movie ‘a prime example of companies exploiting severe mental illnesses, using the same old white manic pixie trope’.\u00a0<\/p>\n
‘It’s another romanticisation of eating disorders that’ll act as pro-ana porn and spur on people with existing eating disorders,’ this person wrote.<\/p>\n
One viewer said they were ‘beyond triggered’ after watching the trailer and worried about how it would affect those currently struggling with an eating disorder.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Another person slammed Netflix’s new film in those terms: ‘First 13 Reasons Why, now To The Bone, can’t Netflix stop triggering those with mental health problems and go back to lesbians in prison?’<\/p>\n

‘My goal with the film was not to glamorize EDs, but to serve as a conversation starter about an issue that is too often clouded by secrecy and misconceptions.
