FISH OIL IN PREGNANCY MAY REDUCE A CHILD&#8217;S RISK OF DIABETES\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Taking fish oil in pregnancy may reduce a child&#8217;s risk of diabetes, research suggested earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Giving overweight pregnant rats fresh fish oil improves their offspring&#8217;s response to insulin, a study found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Previous research has demonstrated insulin sensitivity is protective against diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Lead author Dr Ben Albert from the University of Auckland, said: &#8216;This is exciting because it raises the question: if overweight women take fresh fish oil in pregnancy, will it lower the risk of their children later developing diabetes?&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Yet, researchers advise women eat more oily fish rather than taking fish oil as some supplements are of dubious quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-medium health-ccox mol-style-bold\">How the study was carried out \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The researchers analysed\u00a04,495 children aged between nine and 10 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The children were assessed for factors that influence their risk of developing diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Their body proportions, activity levels and the amount of time they spend in front of a screen &#8211; either watching television or using a computer &#8211; every day were also recorded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-medium health-ccox mol-style-bold\">Key findings<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Results reveal that children who spend more than three hours a day in front of a screen are heavier and have greater insulin resistance, putting them at risk of diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Insulin resistance reduces a person&#8217;s sensitivity to the hormone. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Such children also produce impaired amounts of the hormone leptin, which is involved in regulating appetite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">These results remained even once the children&#8217;s activity levels were taken into account.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p relevant, given rising levels of type 2 diabetes, the early emergence of type 2 diabetes risk, and recent trends suggesting screen-related activities are increasing in
