(Joanne Stassen\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Never too old to be active&#8221;\u00a0reads one framed newspaper clipping.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Next to it, hangs a photo of Edith and Norm with matching blue helmets, cycling the roads of Brisbane, Australia in 1997.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Together, the pair cycled about\u00a030,000 kilometres around the world after retirement. They once biked and camped their way from Yellowknife to Edmonton. Then they cycled across Canada.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had a wonderful life,&#8221; says Edith.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4299540.1505946511!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/edith-and-norm-mair.jpg\" alt=\"Edith and Norm Mair\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">The couple cycled about 30,000 kilometres together after retiring. (Joanne Stassen\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>But it&#8217;s hard to say if Norm remembers any of that.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>He started losing his memories about 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;The doctor said you have Alzheimer&#8217;s,&#8221; Edith says to Norm, holding his hand.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;Old-timers,&#8221; pipes in Norm, drawing a giggle out of his wife.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s right,&#8221; she says, &#8220;We have old-timers and Alzheimer&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<h2>Daily walks, hand-in-hand<\/h2>\n<p \/>\n<p>Edith still talks to Norm as though he remembers.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d say, &#8216;You remember that?'&#8221; says Edith. &#8220;And he says, &#8216;Oh yes.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p>\n <span class=\"pullquote-quotation\">&#8220;So many people are afraid to even say the word Alzheimer&#8217;s, and I was like that myself.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n <cite class=\"pullquote-source\">&#8211; Edith <span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\"><span class=\"scayt-misspell-word\">Mair<\/span><\/span><\/cite>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norm&#8217;s dementia\u00a0was slowed down by medication, says Edith, but after Norm started leaving home on his own and getting lost, she made the difficult decision of moving him to the Yellowknife-based Territorial Dementia Facility.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>But that didn&#8217;t stop the couple from taking walks down Niven Lake Trail together, hand-in-hand, everyday.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4299546.1505946451!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/edith-and-norm-mair.jpg\" alt=\"Edith and Norm Mair\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">&#8216;They were very tender and loving, and they still had fun together,&#8217; says neighbour Gillian Burles. (Joanne Stassen\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;They love each other,&#8221; says Gillian Burles, their next-door neighbour of 25 years. &#8220;They were very tender and loving, and they still had fun together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re the idea you have of a couple growing old together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<h2>Brought to tears by neighbour&#8217;s song<\/h2>\n<p \/>\n<p>The news of Norm&#8217;s diagnosis &#8220;hit us like a sack of hammers,&#8221; says Burles.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Despite just being &#8220;over-the-fence neighbours,&#8221; only chatting once in a while, Burles felt compelled to write a song for the lovebirds next door.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>It&#8217;s title: <em>I&#8217;ll remember for you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;I started to think about the milestones that you have as a couple, you meet, and then you fall in love and then you get your house and you have your family and all the kids \u2026 All those memories that he doesn&#8217;t have anymore, but she does,&#8221; says Burles.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;And as long as she has those memories, it&#8217;s real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4299525.1505946458!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/gillian-burles-norm-and-edith-mair.jpg\" alt=\"Gillian Burles, Norm and Edith Mair\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Burles, left, wrote a song for Norm and Edith Mair about the love that endures through Norm&#8217;s dementia. (Joanne Stassen\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;That song was so beautiful when I first heard it, the tears were running down my cheeks because she was just saying exactly how I felt,&#8221; says Edith.<\/p>\n<p>Edith hopes to share the song as an encouragement for others going through a similar experience.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>&#8220;So many people are afraid to even say the word Alzheimer&#8217;s, and I was like that myself.
