Like a homing missile, it delivers a &#8216;warhead&#8217; in the form of a potent chemotherapy drug.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Since it directly targets tumours while avoiding healthy cells, side effects are kept to a minimum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a clinical trial involving 108 women with triple-negative breast cancer that had spread around the body, the infused drug caused &#8216;significant&#8217; tumour shrinkage, researchers reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-34f8de30c274bd08\" src=\"image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2019\/02\/20\/22\/9136464-6727095-image-a-1_1550702645870.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" alt=\"A third of triple negative breast cancer patients lived longer and had better quality of life after taking the drug which effectively shrunk their tumors\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/><\/p>\n<p>    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-34f8de30c274bd08\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2019\/02\/20\/22\/9136464-6727095-image-a-1_1550702645870.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" alt=\"A third of triple negative breast cancer patients lived longer and had better quality of life after taking the drug which effectively shrunk their tumors\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">A third of triple negative breast cancer patients lived longer and had better quality of life after taking the drug which effectively shrunk their tumors<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The women had all previously failed to respond to two or more previous treatments.\u00a0All had a poor prognosis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Overall, a third of the patients responded to the drug and typical survival time was 13 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Nine long-term responders remained free of any disease progression for more than a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Senior investigator Dr Kevin Kalinsky, from Columbia University, New York, said: &#8216;I think this drug has the potential to change practice, because the data looks so compelling, even with the relatively small number of patients in the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>\n<p>  <span>You CAN use expired drugs if you&#8217;re in a pinch: Study&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>  <span>The world&#8217;s best-selling drug costs SIX times more in the US&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;There&#8217;s an unmet need for patients with metastatic (spreading) triple-negative breast cancer, and we see significant tumour shrinkage with this new therapy.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Triple negative breast cancers are notoriously hard to treat.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They are impervious to normal types of hormone therapy and drugs that target the cancer-fuelling HER-2 protein.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The new drug is also being tested against other types of breast cancer as well as bladder and prostate cancers, said researchers writing in the New England Journal of Medicine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">During the trial only 3 percent of patients stopped taking the drug due to adverse side effects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The main effects seen were hair loss, diarrhoea and fatigue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Kalinsky added: &#8216;Having smaller tumours can be incredibly meaningful to a patient&#8217;s quality of life.
