When the fever wouldn’t break, Alecia took her to the emergency room at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

Olivia was admitted to the hospital and, about 48 hours later, her condition rapidly declined.

‘I knew something was really wrong. They [called] awareness code on her and she was in respiratory failure,’ Alecia told Fox 17.

‘You just see your child laying there and you can’t hug them, and you think: “When is the last time?” [And you’re] trying to remember those moments and all the daily stuff you take for granted.’

Woman who was left paralyzed after being accidentally shot… ‘I felt like a monster’: Mother left unable to eat or blink…

After doctors ran several tests, Oliviawas diagnosed with AFM.

AFM is a rare, but serious, condition that affects the nervous system. Specifically it attacks the area of the spinal cord called gray matter, which causes the body’s muscles and reflexes to weaken.

Symptoms often develop after a viral infection, such as enterovirus or West Nile virus, but often no clear cause is found.

Patients start off having flu-like symptoms including sneezing and coughing. This slowly turns into muscle weakness, difficulty moving the eyes and then polio-like symptoms including facial drooping and difficulty swallowing.

Outbreaks of AFM happen approximately every two years. In the US, outbreaks have occurred in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

No specific treatment is available for AFM and interventions are generally recommended on a case-by-case basis.

In rare cases, AFM can cause neurological complications that could lead to death.

 <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" id="i-f159c33ce6b93721" src="image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" data-src="https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/06/12/20/14709574-7134321-image-m-39_1560366617350.jpg" height="621" width="634" alt="She spent several days on a ventilator and nine weeks at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.
