I\u2019ve always come back to the point where I could never do that to my husband Gary, the children and my parents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018That said, I\u2019ve denied myself the escape route, if you like, of ending this debilitating depression. It found that 56 per cent of people said their mental health had declined since March last year, with 48 per cent now feeling anxious and 46 per cent suffering with low mood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wendy has decided to speak out about her experiences as she and Gary have become ambassadors for a charity, Silence of Suicide, which is dedicated to breaking the taboo of the deep-seated depression that can lead to someone taking their own life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It was set up in 2015 by Michael Mansfield QC, following the suicide of his daughter Anna, together with his third wife, Yvette Greenway, who had lost a friend to suicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For many years, Wendy felt too embarrassed to discuss her deep, bleak periods of depression. One such wave hit in 2017 as her 50th birthday approached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I despaired at the thought that life looked like it was never going to be better than this,\u2019 says Wendy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I became increasingly preoccupied with thoughts questioning why I was on the planet. I was overwhelmed with waves of negativity.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She was already on the antidepressant sertraline, which she\u2019d first been prescribed in the 1990s. Over time, her doctor gradually increased the dose, from 50mg daily to 200mg, the maximum permitted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But that was not enough to halt the depressive periods altogether \u2014 and a filming job last summer became Wendy\u2019s most recent tipping point into severe depression.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She was working with a charity on an undercover investigation into a pig farm and the conditions in which the animals were kept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018In the dead of night, we filmed inside a crowded hangar housing 8,000 pigs where there was probably only room \u2014 and food \u2014 for half that number,\u2019 says Wendy. \u2018I\u2019d never seen anything like it in my life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She cried more or less non-stop for days after, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I became so depressed it was as if my body had shut down. Even so, Wendy had no expectation that anything useful could be done for her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I was sceptical,\u2019 she says. \u2018What good could counselling achieve? How could words make any difference to my ingrained depression? I was more or less reconciled to the fact that this was what I was destined to feel like for the rest of my life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She sobbed her way through an initial assessment (by phone because of the pandemic), at the end of which she was told she had \u2018severe existential depression\u2019. In layman\u2019s terms, it translates as life having no meaning; of hopelessness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018While I was quite shocked by the diagnosis, because it was more deep-seated than standard depression, I was also quite relieved,\u2019 says Wendy. \u2018Now it had a name, I could embark on how to deal with it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She was also told that she\u2019d benefit from a three-month course of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which aims to improve mental health by challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wendy waited three months before she was assigned an NHS counsellor. In November, she began her weekly one-hour telephone sessions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now, after eight sessions, she says she is amazed by how helpful they\u2019re proving to be, because they\u2019re training her to keep calm and analyse her feelings rather than give up in despair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I\u2019m lucky that I always speak to the same woman,\u2019 she says. \u2018You\u2019re baring your soul and I couldn\u2019t have done that with a succession of counsellors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I have to do homework every week \u2014 reading and written exercises where I record my thoughts on a daily basis \u2014 to train myself to think in a different way. I can only say that it\u2019s been a revelation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But it\u2019s not been plain sailing. Three weeks into her course, she suffered a full-blown panic attack about her finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The family\u2019s fragile fortunes have not helped Wendy\u2019s mental health over the years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The family now live in a rented house in West London but, at one stage, with a credit rating so poor they couldn\u2019t provide a guaranteed lump sum to a prospective landlord, they had to live in a Travelodge hotel.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"rotator-panels link-bogr1 linkro-ccox\">\n<li>  <span>Has London beaten the second wave of Covid? Dramatic map&#8230;<\/span> <\/a>  <span>Delays at Heathrow as Border Force check &#8216;every UK arrival&#8217;&#8230;<\/span> <\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">At times, she and Gary had to sleep in a car while their children stayed with friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Their finances started going wrong in the early 2000s when a business deal, in which Gary was involved, failed to deliver the promised substantial fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On occasion, Anthea lent them money, including to help pay for their sons\u2019 private school fees, but they have never been in a position to repay her.<\/p>\n<p>   <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-dc0332e221ce2187\" src=\"image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/01\/18\/22\/38171608-9161153-image-a-56_1611009256374.jpg\" height=\"1707\" width=\"306\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-dc0332e221ce2187\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2021\/01\/18\/22\/38171608-9161153-image-a-56_1611009256374.jpg\" height=\"1707\" width=\"306\" alt=\"\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We haven\u2019t spoken for three years,\u2019 says Wendy, \u2018and I can\u2019t see that changing any time soon.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Determined to put such experiences behind her, Wendy made a commitment in 2020 to stay on top of her financial affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018So I deliberately set up direct debits in a new business bank account to keep the bills separate from other money and ensure they are paid on time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Yet in November, looking at her computer, she could find no record of the direct debits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I began to panic,\u2019 she recalls. \u2018A feeling of almighty dread started off in my stomach and I could physically feel it rising up my body \u2014 to a point where I was convinced it would reach my brain and it would implode.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018After all our financial woes in the past, it seemed like the nightmare had begun again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I started hyperventilating. Luckily, Gary was in the room at the time and caught me as my legs went from under me. I was so panicked, I couldn\u2019t tell him what had happened.\u2019 In the event, the explanation was straightforward. Wendy had been looking at the wrong page on her online account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018This wasn\u2019t a symptom of my depression but it did underline the fragility of my mental state. It could have been anything that set me off.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But Wendy says the financial issues don\u2019t begin to explain the depression from which she has suffered for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018When I was seven, I can clearly recall sitting in front of a mirror and thinking that if I looked deep into my own eyes long and hard enough, I\u2019d find the answer as to who I was. I couldn\u2019t work out why I should be here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I was too young to articulate this to myself at the time, but was I suffering the early signs of depression?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wendy is the youngest of three girls. Her middle sister, Ruth, was born with spina bifida and died when she was 15 and Wendy just 11. \u2018That was a terrible shock,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Wendy married for the first time at 19 \u2014 an emotionally and physically abusive relationship which ended in divorce before she was 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In 1996, she moved to London and got a job on the satellite channel Live TV, before being hired as a presenter on Absolutely Animals on Channel 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I was earning more money than I\u2019d ever dreamed of,\u2019 she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018I bought my own house \u2014 everything should have been perfect. So why was it that I was disappointed I\u2019d woken up each morning; why did I feel I\u2019d rather be dead?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Mental problems weren\u2019t something you talked about back then. Fine, if you\u2019ve got your arm in plaster. But it\u2019s awkward if your spirit is broken.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She knows that there will be some who ask how she could feel so low when she had so much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018What some people don\u2019t understand is that depression isn\u2019t linked to material possessions or being comfortably off. It\u2019s a separate entity and much, much more fundamental.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She didn\u2019t seek medical help until the mid-90s, when she confided in her GP.
