He was in pain and had \u2018virtually stopped eating and drinking\u2019. Family members wanted to continue the legal action on a matter of principle and Prime Life Ltd has agreed to pay \u00a35,000 damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Their solicitor Hayley Collinson, of Hudgell Solicitors, said: \u2018This was an appalling case of neglect at every level, at a company which cares for hundreds of elderly people across the UK.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The couple, who had no children, had been happily married for 49 years. Mrs Dearnley acted as his carer when he developed dementia in his final years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mrs Dearnley\u2019s sister told the court how the retired joiner had been \u2018wrapped in cotton wool\u2019 by his loving wife, but she arranged the holiday because she \u2018needed a break\u2019 from her caring duties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mr Dearnley had previously stayed at Wyton Abbey for one or two nights at a time and although his wife was \u2018worried\u2019 she believed he was in good hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mrs Dearnley even phoned the home during her holiday, but was unaware of his failing health. In a serious case review carried out into Mr Dearnley\u2019s care, it was revealed that he was left with bruises on his arm, hip, forehead and nose from falls at the care home. His behaviour \u2018changed significantly\u2019, he barely ate or drank and was rubbing his knees as if in pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The report also told how he received a \u2018transient\u2019 examination by a district nurse on June 29 \u2013 two days before his death \u2013 and the next day had \u2018deep and shallow breathing and was taking very little food or drink.\u2019 Still no doctor was called.
