Three in four women starting fertility treatment will have a baby within five years, a new study has found.<\/p>\n

A review of almost 20,000 women in Denmark showed more than half (57 per cent ) gave birth within two years, and three in four (71 per cent) within five.<\/p>\n

Most of those births were the result of treatment, but a significant proportion (14 per cent) were spontaneous.<\/p>\n

The findings could offer an answer to couples’ most frequently-asked questions: does it work and how long will it take?<\/p>\n

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FERTILITY TREATMENT?\u00a0<\/span> <\/h3>\n

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

IUI is typically offered to couples that have a good chance of conceiving but are hampered by anovulatory, unexplained or mild male factor infertility.<\/p>\n

It is a cheaper more patient-friendly procedure.<\/p>\n

Concentrated motile sperm are inserted into the woman’s uterus when she is ovulating. It can be done up to three times a day for the best chance of success.<\/p>\n

In-vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/span><\/p>\n

Assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as IVF, is more efficient.<\/p>\n

IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs at once.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The eggs are removed, fertilized in a lab, and the fertilized embryos are inserted into the uterus.<\/p>\n

Denmark is one of the only places in the world with such extensive data of fertility treatments and live births, giving this prognosis authority over previous studies.<\/p>\n

Researchers at Copenhagen University Hospital analyzed women between 2007 and 2010 as part of a study.<\/p>\n

They carried out follow-ups after two years, three years and five years to monitor for live births.<\/p>\n

Of those who started with in-vitro fertilization (IVF), 46 per cent conceived within two years.<\/p>\n

Those who started with intrauterine insemination (IUI) had a 34 per cent success rate of conceiving within two years.<\/p>\n

The total number of birth rates increased over time – from 65 per cent at three years to 71 per cent at five years.<\/p>\n

However, women who stuck with IUI beyond two years saw little increase in the likelihood of conception. Most patients in the study, by that point, had switched to IVF.<\/p>\n

Those who conceived within five years after IUI were mostly spontaneous conceptions unconnected to the treatment.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, age was a key factor.<\/p>\n

Eighty per cent of women under 35 had given birth within five years of starting treatment.<\/p>\n

That figure diminished to 60.5 per cent for women aged 35-40, and to 26 per cent for women over 40.<\/p>\n
