Most patients in the study, by that point, had switched to IVF.

Those who conceived within five years after IUI were mostly spontaneous conceptions unconnected to the treatment.

Unsurprisingly, age was a key factor.

Eighty per cent of women under 35 had given birth within five years of starting treatment.

That figure diminished to 60.5 per cent for women aged 35-40, and to 26 per cent for women over 40.

Acupuncture ‘doubles the chances of getting pregnant through…

Just a small amount of weight loss could help women get…

Why don’t I have a dad? These results help us provide realistic information based on their age and chance of natural conception.

‘Overall, chances of a live birth are good, but successful treatment takes time.

‘Couples will often need several treatment cycles.

‘And even though the greatest chance of conception is following treatment, there is still a reasonable chance of spontaneous conception.’

Dr Malchau explained that there are benefits and drawbacks for both kinds of treatment.

      <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" id="i-44de7e302aec0b5e" src="http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/07/04/22/35F42E4300000578-3674271-image-a-2_1467668547858.jpg" height="422" width="634" alt="IVF was found to be the most efficient procedure.
