Gene controlling coughing,&#8230;<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n      <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">As a result those trying to quit smoking are often advised to drink less at the same time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The study involved household surveys, where a total of 6,287 out of 31,878 people reported smoking between March 2014 and September 2015.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Of these, 144 had begun an attempt to quit smoking in the week before the survey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They had also completed a validated questionnaire called the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wocc\">                                <span>COULD THE SECRET TO QUITTING DRINKING OR SMOKING BE AN IMPLANT IN THE BRAIN THAT CONTROLS CRAVINGS?\u00a0<\/span>                            <\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Giving up drinking or smoking could be made much easier \u2013 using a brain implant which banishes cravings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Scientists are trialling the pioneering technique which involves implanting a tiny, programmable device into the brain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The implant targets the part of the brain responsible for controlling cravings and also helps to reduce levels of stress, which can worsen addictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It uses cutting-edge neuro-stimulators made by US company St Jude Medical which are designed to enable scientists to \u2018talk\u2019 to the brain through electrical stimulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Neurosurgeon Professor Dirk De Ridder, from the University of Otago, has inserted implants into the brains of six alcoholic patients &#8211; but he hopes to get 10 participants by the end of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It was the first study of its kind in the world to target alcoholic cravings through an implant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Since surgery, none of the patients have abused alcohol and two have also given up smoking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers classified the smokers as light or heavy drinkers &#8211; and analysed their current attempt to cut down on alcohol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They then looked at their recent attempt to stop smoking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Brown said: &#8216;This study found that smokers who reported attempting to stop within the last week had lower levels of alcohol consumption, especially binging.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They were less likely to be classified as high risk drinkers, compared with those who were not trying to give up tobacco.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Heavy-drinking smokers who had recently quit were also more likely to also report they were cutting down than smokers who were still lighting up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The study also looked at the available literature on the\u00a0close relationship between smoking and alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Drinking alcohol is associated with a lapse &#8211; seeing newly-quit smokers going back to their old habits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This is why smokers are advised to cut down on alcohol when trying to quit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Brown stressed this was an observational study and cannot say whether giving up smoking led to a reduction in drinking or vice versa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He suggested smokers may choose to forgo that extra glass of wine or pint of beer when attempting to kick the habit, to boost their chances of being succesful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Or, it could be that those\u00a0who drink less are more likely to quit smoking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">If this is true, heavy drinkers may need to more encouragement than other groups to stub out their cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While more money is spent on trying to cut smoking, future health campaigns could also target those who quit to cut down on their drinking too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The study was published in the journal BMC Public Health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-14eac4bdb91b3a89\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2016\/07\/21\/16\/3679E89E00000578-3701603-image-a-76_1469115367144.jpg\" height=\"421\" width=\"634\" alt=\"People associate smoking with drinking \u00a0- which is why those trying to kick the habit are advised to cut down on alcohol to prevent a lapse back into their old behaviour\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">People associate smoking with drinking \u00a0&#8211;
