the trillions of bacteria that naturally live in the gut are beginning to be linked to conditions from autism to multiple sclerosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">US researcher Sangram Sisodia, said: \u2018We are exploring very new territory in how the gut influences brain health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018This is an area that people who work with neurodegenerative diseases are going to be increasingly interested in, because it could have an influence down the road on treatments.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Sisodia, of the University of Chicago, began by comparing the guts of mice given antibiotics for six months with that of untreated creatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Both groups had the same number of bacteria \u2013 but from vastly different strains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He then looked at the animals\u2019 brains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">All of the mice were from a breed prone to Alzheimer\u2019s and should have had lots of the sticky protein plaques that clog up the brains of human patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But the mice given the antibiotics had half as much of the poisonous protein, suggesting the disease had developed more slowly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is thought that chemicals produced by the bugs in our guts affect the immune system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">By changing the bugs, the antibiotics changed the chemicals, making it easier for the immune clear away the poisonous Alzheimer\u2019s protein.<\/p>\n<p> much-needed new treatments for Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researcher Myles Minter said: \u2018We don\u2019t propose that a long-term course of antibiotics is going to be a treatment \u2013 that\u2019s just absurd for a whole number of reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018But what this study does is allow us to explore further, now that we&#8217;re clearly changing the gut microbial population and have new bugs that are more prevalent in mice with altered amyloid deposition after antibiotics.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Possibilities include drugs based on the chemicals made by the bugs \u2013 or even possibly probiotics packed with brain-friendly bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Sisodia said; \u2018I don\u2019t know about probiotics but if you could find the right types of bacteria that protect brain health, there may be something
