then turned into sepsis<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS MCAD?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mast cells, a type of blood cell, play an important role in the body\u2019s defence system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In a healthy person, these cells release chemical mediators, such as histamine,  in reaction to foreign bodies, but in a person with MCAS this function is impaired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Amongst the triggers are a variety of different foods, exercise, chemicals, fragrances and stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Many sufferers struggle to identify their triggers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">MCAS can present simultaneously in patients who have Ehlers Danlos syndrome  and\/or postural tachycardia syndrome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The available treatments for MCAS stabilise the mast cells and mitigate the effects of the chemicals they release, e.g. anti-histamines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Avoiding triggers is also a key part in coping with this illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-bold health-ccox mol-style-medium\">Intensive care\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hannah&#8217;s other conditions include Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which makes her body&#8217;s connective tissues collapse and can leave sufferers in constant pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She also has postural tachycardia syndrome, which causes an abnormal increase in heart rate after sitting up or standing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It typically causes dizziness, fainting and other symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">To cope with a host of symptoms she has up to 16 IV injections and 16 different painkillers every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hanna said: &#8216;I&#8217;ve had a nose bleed before, which has turned into double pneumonia, which then turned into sepsis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I was in intensive care for four-and-a-half months.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Now Hannah wants to raise awareness of the MCAD and is urging people to be more hygienic \u2013 warning that someone or coughing or sneezing on her could have deadly consequences.<\/p>\n<p>        <img be coughing next to me, and they might have a virus that&#8217;s only giving them a tickly cough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;That virus will end up putting me in intensive care. That&#8217;s how extreme it is. &#8216;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Hannah is now hoping to get through the winter without having to visit hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She added: &#8216;Every year since I was a little girl I would end up in hospital. Hopefully this year will be different.&#8217;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS EDS?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is the name for a group of rare inherited conditions that affect the connective tissue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Connective tissues provide support in skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Different types of EDS are caused by faults in certain genes that make connective tissue weaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Depending on the type of EDS, the faulty gene may have been inherited from one paren, or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Sometimes the faulty gene isn\u2019t inherited, but occurs spontaneously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">EDS can affect people in different ways. For some the condition is relatively mild, while for others their symptoms can be disabling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Some of the rare severe types can even be life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span class=\"mol-style-italic\">Source: NHS Choices<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">WHAT IS POTS?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) is an abnormal increase in heart rate that occurs after sitting up or standing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It typically causes dizziness, fainting and other symptoms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">PoTS is most common in girls and women aged 15 to 50.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Some people have mild symptoms, while others find the condition affects their quality of life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In many cases, the cause is unknown.
