The gigantic mass is thought to be formed from nerve tissue

They decided to operate immediately to remove the growth – which was 35cm in length.

During surgery lasting several hours, medics worked tirelessly to remove the mass without damaging any organs nearby.

‘The team of the oncological department had to perform a tricky job of carefully separating the overgrown mass from arteries, kidneys, intestines, liver and other vital organs,’ said hospital spokesman Dmitry Andreev.

Doctors also found a large blood clot in the inferior vena cava, the large vein carrying blood into the heart from the lower body.

Experts said it was the first time they had performed such a procedure.

Now the team led by head surgeon Vladimir Medvedev are set to share the rare case on an international level.

The patient has since been discharged from hospital and is now recovering at home.
