9 Total Bummers It’s Finally Time to Get Over (Like, NOW)

“Get over it” isn’t always the most welcome advice—those words are pretty harsh! But when it comes down to it, letting go of toxic things in your life really can be one of the most liberating favors you can do for yourself. If you don’t believe us, try saying goodbye to just one of the 10 things below, and feel the weight lift off your shoulders. Then get over the rest of them, too.

1. The “Perfect” Date Who Never Called You Back
We know, we know—the date seemed to go so well that the radio silence that followed was enough to drive you crazy. Stop obsessing about what might have gone wrong (or hoping that he might call with a super sound excuse for the delay), and go enjoy another awesome date with someone else.

2. The Best Friend You Grew Apart From
Parting ways with someone who was once such a big part of your life is hard, but do you know what’s harder? Those super forced monthly dinners where you pretend nothing has changed between you and that you’re both just crazy busy. There’s no reason to cut her out of your life completely—but it’s time to get over the hope that you can still be as close as you used to be.

3. Your Dream Soul Mate
Knowing what you want in a partner is good. Holding out for the perfect guy, down to his exact height, favorite TV show, and preferred breakfast cereal, is just setting yourself up to be disappointed. Let go of your preconceived notions of whom you think you should end up with, and watch your dating life transform.

4. That One Outfit You Haven’t Fit into Since College
If and when you get back to that size—and come on, does it really matter either way?—you can buy yourself an even better outfit. This one’s just taking up space in your closet.

5. The Dream Job You Didn’t Get
The job description read like it was written specifically for you, you nailed the interview…and they went with someone else. And okay, it hurt. But if you continue to feel a sting every time you see a new job listing, you’re driving yourself crazy for no reason. Thing is: The job probably wasn’t that dreamy IRL, and you’re going to go kill it somewhere else.

6. That Grudge Against Your Old Frenemy
Even if she totally deserves your dislike, she definitely doesn’t deserve the time and energy it takes you to hate on her. What’s the point in seething every time she pops up on your Facebook feed? You’d be surprised by how much more satisfying it is to ditch the grudge than bitch about her behind her back.

7. The Argument You Lost (Even If You Were Totally Right)
Whether it was with your your mom, your coworker, or your husband, you can’t win them all. Doesn’t matter if you were right or wrong—if the argument is long dead and you’re still pissed, it’s time to move right along.

8. The Major Work Flub That Earned You a Serious Scolding
Yeah, you screwed up. Yeah, your boss got mad. No, you’re not going to undo the damage by flinching in self-loathing every time you see her. Hey, what doesn’t get you fired makes you stronger.

9. That One Ex
You know which ex. And girl: You’re better off without him.
