The average woman’s breasts have increased from a modest 34B in the 1960s to a voluptuous 36DD today, the same size as curvy Kim Kardashian.
Researchers from lingerie brand Bluebella have charted how British women’s figures have changed over the last 50 years, using government statistics, and identified a star to represent each decade.
They found that in 1967, the average woman was a 34B, but fast forward 50 years and the average UK woman measures two inches more on the back and has gone up three cup sizes to a 34DD.

Barbarella star Jane Fonda represented the average woman of the 1960s with 34B breasts
Back in the 1960s, the average woman was the same size as Jane Fonda, star of Barbarella, Barefoot in the Park and other sixties hits.
But a decade later, due to improved health, bust sizes saw a slight increase to 34C, the same shape as Barbara Streisand, at the peak of her powers in the 1970s with movie hits such as A Star Is Born, The Way We Were and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever.

By the 1980s, and with breast enhancement surgery now in its infancy, the average woman had grown again and so had her bust size – up to 34D.
This is the same shape as screen beauty Daryl Hannah, who had the biggest hit of her career in 1984 with Splash.

By the 1990s bust sizes increased again, especially as cosmetic surgery started to enter a boom period with surgically enhanced icons from the era such as Pamela Anderson from Baywatch setting trends.

The average bust size for British women went up to 34DD – the same size as Halle Berry who had movie hits in this decade with The Flintstones and Bulworth.
By the 2000s, women’s bodies had evolved again due to better diet and fitness, but the growing problem of obesity also played a part.
The average bust size was up to 36D – the same as Scarlett Johansson, who had big hits during the decade with Lost In Translation, Girl With A Pearl Earring and Match Point.
Further problems with obesity and the continued popularity of breast enhancement surgery have seen bust sizes grow again in the last decade to 36DD.

Few stars have busts to match the size of the current Miss Average but one who does is the famously curvy Kim Kardashian.
Bluebella chief executive Emily Bendell said: ‘Better health, diets, improved fitness and the trend towards bigger and often surgically enhanced busts make Miss Average from today barely recognisable from her 1967 counterpart when it comes to her figure.
‘To go from Jane Fonda’s 34B bust in 1967 to Kim Kardashian’s surgically enhanced 36DD breasts in the space of two generations represents a bigger shift in 50 years than is probably reflected in the previous few centuries.’
