Can YOU guess how old these women are?

It’s long been said that your hands are the biggest age giveaway but according to groundbreaking new research, it’s your eyes that really reveal how old you are.

In fact, your peepers could be adding 22 years to your looks, according to Olay.

Data from the skincare brand’s scientists, presented recently at an American Academy of Dermatology Meeting, reveals that the eye area ages earlier than any other part of the face. And Olay has even created an entire app dedicated to determining a woman’s skin age using clever technology.

We decided to put the research to the test, by taking three women of differing ages and zooming in on their eyes. So can you guess how old they are just by looking at their features?

Speaking about her skincare regime, Fiona, 46, said: ‘When I was younger, I wasn’t very diligent with my skincare routine, however this changed as soon as I hit 30 and became more aware of changes in my skin.’

She says she is now an ‘obsessive’ cleanser and exfoliator and loves to experiment with different types of products. She also cleanses twice a day and never leaves her makeup on.

‘I have oily to combination skin, which has its disadvantages (notable pores), although one advantage is that I think it means that my skin ages better than it otherwise would do.

‘I often notice that women younger than me seem to have more lines and wrinkles, whereas for me age spots and uneven tone are larger skin concerns.’

Speaking about her skin, 32-year-old Maria said: ‘I am very fortunate that my skin rarely breaks out. Because of this my routine is pretty simple, but has evolved.’

She has started to use an eye cream to try and delay the ‘wrinkles she knows will inevitably come’.

‘But I can’t say I’m as diligent at using it as I am with the other products,’ she admits.

#I rarely get facials or use masks, but always enjoy when I do treat myself to them.’

Morning and night she uses a facewash with a silicone scrubber, hyaluronic acid, and moisturiser.

For daytime, she uses an SPF moisturiser, and at night she uses a thicker night cream, and sometimes a facial oil if her skin is really dry.

Once a week, she will use a natural exfoliator.

Speaking about her skincare regime, Anne said: ‘I would say that I have a “low maintenance” attitude to my skincare routine, although I always make sure that I cleanse and use a moisturiser with an SPF every day.

‘This is something which I have been doing for over 45 years and it seems to have stood me in good stead!’

Anne admits that she often gets told that she looks younger than her actual age, which, she says, is a ‘nice compliment’ to hear as overall she looks after herself and likes to keep fit and healthy.

‘I do, however, feel that my eye area lets me down as I noticed it’s the area where my wrinkles first started to develop – although I do prefer to think of them as “laughter lines” and a sign of a life well lived!’

Speaking about her skincare regime, Phoebe, the youngest of our women, admitted she barely does anything.

‘I don’t really do much with my skin,’ she said. ‘I wash it with water every night before I go to bed.

It’s quite dry and I use Nivea light moisturising day cream after I’ve washed it, but that’s it.

‘I’ve never had an issue with spots so I’m quite lucky in that regard. I’m also not really concerned about wrinkles although perhaps I should be…!

‘My mum doesn’t do anything to her skin and she’s quite wrinkly, although I’m skeptical about anti-ageing products actually doing anything.’

OLAY’S NEW SKIN ADVISOR

In response to the research, Olay has launched the Olay Skin Advisor, a new platform designed to help women better understand their skin and find the products best-suited to their personal skincare needs.

With just one selfie, Skin Advisor analyses a woman’s face to determine her current ‘skin age’ (i.e. how young or old she looks) and which areas of her face are driving that age.

Following a short series of questions about her personal skin concerns and product preferences, Skin Advisor delivers a personalised product regimen recommendation based on extensive knowledge about what products have worked best for women like her – women with the same skin concerns, needs and preferences.

Ultimately, Olay Skin Advisor helps her find the products that are right for her specific skincare needs.
