Correctional officers stop remand inmate from hanging

Hong Kong (HKSAR) – Correctional officers stopped a remand inmate from attempting to hang himself in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre today (July 20).

During patrol at about 10am, an officer noticed that the 40-year-old male remand inmate tied his clothes onto the grill window inside the centre hospital and attempted to hang himself. The officer immediately asked him to stop and called for reinforcements.

The remand inmate was conscious at the time. He was treated by a medical officer in the centre hospital and subsequently transferred to a public hospital for further examination.

Clinical psychologist will follow up the case.

A spokesman for the Correctional Services Department said, “The department uses all possible measures to prevent people in its custody from attempting suicide or self-harm. These measures include administrative arrangements, the improvement of institution facilities, staff training and first aid services.”

The inmate was remanded to the centre for an offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug.
