{"id":26354,"date":"2015-10-18T03:41:54","date_gmt":"2015-10-18T03:41:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/australian-sailing-pressures-rio-over-water-pollution\/"},"modified":"2015-10-18T03:41:54","modified_gmt":"2015-10-18T03:41:54","slug":"australian-sailing-pressures-rio-over-water-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/healthmedicinet.com\/news\/australian-sailing-pressures-rio-over-water-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Australian sailing pressures Rio over water pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <!-- google_ad_section_start --><\/p>\n<p>MELBOURNE (Reuters) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Australia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Olympic sailing boss Peter Conde has called on the sport to pressure Rio Olympics organizers to clean up water pollution ahead of next year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Games.<\/p>\n<p>              The water quality of Guanabara Bay, where Olympic sailing and other aquatic events will be held, has long been criticized and come under the microscope amid reports of athletes falling ill after competing there.<\/p>\n<p>              \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It would be good if everyone in the sport kept the pressure onto the government to do what it really needs to do \u00e2\u20ac\u201d to tidy the place up,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Conde said in comments published by News Ltd media on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>              \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re dealing with health and safety issues that are unusual for the sport to have to deal with.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>              Two international sailors, from South Korea and Germany, trained in Rio in August and contracted infections which they said came from the waters.<\/p>\n<p>              An independent study commissioned by the Associated Press and reported in July found the waters were so contaminated with bacteria and viruses from human sewage that athletes could become ill and unable to compete.<\/p>\n<p>              Rio organizers have repeatedly pledged to clean up the waters in time for the Games and played down reports of floating garbage and dead fish washing up on shores.<\/p>\n<p>              Australia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sailors, who won three gold medals at the London Olympics, would have to take extra precautions with their health at Rio next year, Conde said.<\/p>\n<p>              \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It is clearly a priority area that we didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have at the last Games (in London) and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not just about water quality and about getting sick,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>              \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about detection for infection, detection for getting sick through food and safety.<\/p>\n<p>              \u00e2\u20ac\u0153At the simplest level, it comes down to hygiene.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>               (Reporting by Ian Ransom; Editing by Peter Rutherford)<\/p>\n<ul id=\"topics\" class=\"hidden\">\n<li>Sports  Recreation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- google_ad_section_end --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MELBOURNE (Reuters) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Australia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Olympic sailing boss Peter Conde has called on the sport to pressure Rio Olympics organizers to clean up water pollution ahead of next year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Games.
